What you see in the picture above is one of the most famous set pieces for the musical Wicked, opening tomorrow night at the Civic Center in downtown Oklahoma City. The picture depicts the Clock of the Time Dragon, a religious icon in the book "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory Maguire of the Pleasure Faith, or Pfaith. It's an important element of the book, slightly less so in the stage show, but is still an amazing set piece and really transforms the theatre from just a stage to a whole new world - Oz.
I had the chance today to go see the load-in of the sets and lighting for Wicked: The Musical. Having been in theatre in high school and college, this was a really amazing experience. I've seen several shows at the Civic Center but I've never had a chance to stand on their stage and it's funny how all stages seem to have the same feel and smell and I felt right at home. In my time there, I was able to see the beginnings of the set-up of the backdrops, set pieces, flys, lights, sound, and more. I also learned some cool stuff about the production:
